“Chloe”, the short movie, has been designed specifically for this course since it will give the students a unique training program that has been designed to produce a short movie in UNREAL ENGINE and other software. The next generation of artists will acquire specific analytic, methodological, and practical skills for the creation of innovative workflow management.

They will learn the skills of the traditional pipeline that will help them to visualize and create the concept idea, into a full CG render with the latest REAL-TIMEsoftware capabilities offered by UNREAL ENGINE.

The objective of this master course is to give the students all the fundamentals to be fully operative, from day one, in a triple-A feature animation company.

Starting from the foundations of Concept Art and Computer Graphics the students will discover how the workflows are in a triple-A feature animation company. Guided, step by step, by some of the most skilled professionals in the industry, they will learn all the “secrets” and the tips and tricks that those professionals use daily to produce the movies we all love.

MODULE 1

CONCEPT

A Character concept artist is an individual who generates a character that does not yet exist. This includes, but is not limited to, film, animation, and video game production. A concept artist has to create new ideas frequently based on certain creative briefs, and the work has to be done fast.
Learn how to work with an Art Director to create the concept of a character starting from a reference.

MODULE 2

MODELING
CHARACTER

4 WEEKS
Software: MAYA

Character modeling is the process of transforming a concept, essentially an idea, into a three-dimensional model.
Learn how to transform your concept into the 3D world, starting from the initial concept, turn them into modeling by creating 3D shapes and smooth them later for greater details and deliver a production-ready character for the other departments.

CONCEPT
ENVIRONMENT

2 WEEKS
Software: PHOTOSHOP

A concept environment artist is an individual who generates an environment that does not yet exist.
Learn how to create the most entertainment value in your design and how to use the fundamental knowledge of compositing, color, and lighting to bring these ideas to life.
You will know how the industry-standard workflow comes up with unique environment concepts and how to work with the Art Director.

MODULE 4

MODELING
ENVIRONMENT

4 WEEKS
Software: MAYA

Environment artists are 3D Modelers who are specialized in creating indoor and outdoor settings for films, tv series, animation, or video games. They are responsible for background visuals with which characters and objects will interact, such as buildings, roads, flora, furniture, etc.
Learn what it takes to produce either photo-real or cartoon assets to be used in production, by optimizing your scene and modeling with the right topology.

MODULE 5

TEXTURING
& LOOK DEV

2 WEEKS
Software: SUBSTANCE

If a concept artist draws a town or a character, then the texturing and look development artist workout what the look in different conditions will be, when it’s dark, when someone is happy or when it’s raining.
Establishing a look, it’s a balancing process of texturing, lighting, and rendering that match reference images and real footage.
Learn the theory behind PBR (physical-based rendering) workflow and how to use it efficiently to complete the desired look.

MODULE 6

GROOMING
 

2 WEEKS
Software: MAYA

The Grooming Artist works under the supervision of the Surfacing Supervisor and is responsible for the grooming of the 3D character, from hair, eyebrows, bears, threads, animal furs.
You will learn the principles of grooming and how to complete from start to finish a complex groom that meets the technical and artistic vision established for the project.

MODULE 7

RIGGING
 

4 WEEKS
Software: MAYA

Learn to study how a character needs to move based on the story and then build the correct skeletal animation for representing a 3D character model using a series of interconnected digital bones.
Learn the process of creating the bone structure of a 3D model that the animation will use to bring a character or an asset to life.

MODULE 8

INTRO
TO UNREAL

2 WEEKS
Software: UNREAL

UNREAL ENGINE means REAL-TIME rendering; it’s time to learn what makes this software so versatile that it’s widely used in making some of the most spectacular games, advertising, VFX for Film, and architecture. Let us explore the interface, the tools, and the integration it offers with other software to produce beautiful, mesmerizing renders.

2 WEEKS
Software: SUBSTANCE / UNREAL

Now that you have created all the texture and materials, learn what it takes to finalize the look of a character or an asset by applying real physical world parameters with UNREAL ENGINE.

MODULE 10

ANIMATION
 

4 WEEKS
Software: MAYA / UNREAL

Bring to life your best character by learning the fundamentals of animation (timing and keyframes); make it jump, smile, or run, either way, you will the skills to “transform” your character and learn how to properly import the assets into UNREAL ENGINE.

MODULE 11

LIGHTING IN
UNREAL

4 WEEKS
Software: UNREAL

A great light setup can bring your creations to life and UNREAL ENGINE offers you the right tool to mimic the real light world.
You will learn the fundamentals of lighting and how a DOP (director of photography) sets the scene for the best results.

MODULE 12

COMPOSITING
& EDITING

5 WEEKS
Software: NUKE / UNREAL

Master your compositing skills and learn to finalize a full CG render inside UNREAL and with NUKE, the industry-standard software for advanced VFX and used by the world’s biggest and best facilities.
Combine and integrate multiple visual elements from separate sources into a single image or a sequence.
You will learn the fundamentals of compositing and what it takes to produce mind-blowing results. Ultimately editing is where everything comes together, stitching together the work produced, adding sound, and tweaking with color grading to give the wow factor.

WORK

12 WEEKS
Software: PHOTOSHOP/ MAYA / SUBSTANCE / NUKE / UNREAL

After mastering all the skills through the instructors, students will be involved in the actual production of the short film “Chloe”. Ideally starting from a new “scene” or “shot”, under the supervision of professionals, they will strengthen the skills learned, applying those into creating a full CG render, and learning what it takes to be part of a team; mastering the productive approach used during the production, while working with its peers, following an actual production’s workflow.
